Internship

What happened today?????

SO today I basically just went through a lot of introductions. In the orientation the guy said that everything we see at Qualcomm must remain top secret because it is confidential information. We even got ID badges that give us nlimited acess into Qualcomm. Not only that, but soft drinks are free At about 3 my mentor arrived and took look and I to our workplace in building R. Once we go there I set up my own Qualcomm email.

How did you get to internship????

I got to internship by taking the shuttle that was provided by the school.

What did you do for lunch???
At first I ran down to Da Kines and bought some food before my shuttle left. When I got there, in the orientation room there were pre-packaged lunches, and a refrigerator stock full of soda. So then I ate that too.

How did you get home??

My mom picked me up at 4:30 to take me home from internship

How did everything go?

Overall everything went very well. I can't wait to get started testing things and going to business meetings and things like that.

Eisenhower and Bush

Dwight D. Eisenhower's farewell address is still relevant in modern day society because his speech is the result in American society. Eisenhower discusses how "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist." Dwight's also discussed how "The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present – and is gravely to be regarded." America as a nation did not implement actions from Eisenhower's farewell address and there for landed us into the Iraq war because of conflicts within our government, the dominance of corporations, and contrasting views of Eisenhower's ideas of the government and the bush administration.

Conflicts within our government is an issues that still continues in todays society. The two sides are considered "Hawks and Doves" as put by Randy Scherer in a book called "The Antiwar Movement". Hawks are in favor of military actions to solve their problems. Doves resort to peaceful actions to solve their problems. In 2001, two planes hit the twin towers in New York. This sparked a animosity towards Iraq. This was also the year that the Hawks (Bush and his administration) came into power. With the doves having no say in what actions the government can take. George Bush invaded Iraq in mid 2003.

Haliburton is an oil shed corporation with international operations. Before Dick Cheney was in office, he was the CEO of Haliburton. During the war with Cheney in office, he had a say in any involvement Haliburton had with the government. A year before the war in 2002, KBR construction and engineering company (a subsiduary of Haliburton) was sent to Iraq to plan oil well fire fighting. The contract wasn't issued until February of 2003. The concern was that KBR could pump oil out of Iraq to its hearts content which they could. The contract was already intended for KBR.

During Bushes term, his views were exactly opposite of Eisenhower. Everything that Dwight Eisenhower discussed in his farewell address warning us not to do, Bush did. The Iraq war is one of those situations. Eisenhower himself said "Together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose." George Bush did just the opposite. Him and fellow politicians had been planning to invade Iraq even before the 9/11 attack. Dwight also brought up a very good point that "Crises there will continue to be. In meeting them, whether foreign or domestic, great or small, there is a recurring temptation to feel that some spectacular and costly action could become the miraculous solution to all current difficulties." Bush and his administrations operations in Iraq have been very costly indeed. In 2008 alone, over 4000 soldiers died on the front lines of Iraq. The spending on the war is an immense amount as well. In 2008 the reported cost of the war per month was 12 billion dollars; a majority of it is taxpayers money as well.

By failing to take into consideration thoughts and ideas from past presidents, the country has suffered. We as a country have landed ourselves in a financial crisis, and we are losing thousands of soldiers in Iraq ever year. We must really listen to the words of past leaders for within them are words of insight, and ideas that we can use in today's society.

Obama's Inauguration

1. Why did you choose this section?

And for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that, "Our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken. You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."

I chose this quote because for me and many other Americans our hope at this point in time is extremely powerful. A new era as begun, the era of Barack Hussein Obama. I also think that this quote is the definition of struggles within America. For example, we have one almost every conflict with enemy countries because of our hope and spirit to defeat the enemy. We are a country that take what we want and do as we please. If we feel that there are weapons of mass destruction in the middle east, we will not hesitate to send troops over and investigate.

With Barack Obama as president I believe America will flourish better then ever. 2008 as been a very troublesome year. With the spirit of American people we will defeat our challenges This quote doesn't have to be viewed in the state of war either. When I say challenge I am mainly refering to our current financial/economic crisis. I don't think there is anyone who doesn't want to get out of this crisis. This crisis effects everyone, so I think we all need/will keep the faith. With Barack's spirit in the people, I am sure we will see an end to this crisis in the mere future.

To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

My current draft of my thesis is

Money is what makes the world go round, it especially fuels America's economy, but money has lead to many issues including the economic crisis. The economic crisis that we face today was brought upon by selfishness, and abuse of money.

P1: Selfishness has been an action tied into our roots since the beginning of humanity, in this case the situation isn't any difference

P2: Abuse of money was the downfall of our economy especially on wall street with the stock market

Money although it is great to have doesn't solve the worlds problems, it actually creates them (as we have seen in our current economic crisis). We must learn from our mistakes so we can fix the problem

this is what i have so far

Revised:
Albert Einstein was undisputedly one of the smartest men of all time. He was In America at the start of the very first stock market crash on Wall street in 1929 that lead into the great depression. Money is what makes the world go round, it especially fuels America's economy, but money has lead to many issues including the economic crisis. The economic crisis that we face today was not the first that we have had. The quote that I picked from Albert Einstein literally connects to our current economic crisis because it was brought upon by selfishness, the temptation to abuse money, and a lack of understanding from the first stock market crash in 1929.

Selfishness has been an action tied into our roots since the beginning of humanity, in this case the selfishness came in the form of money. This financial crisis was a result of selfishness with money on Wall street.

George Bush,
What is his stand on the Environment?

George Bush is a man who we all know has had a pretty bad reputation as being our president for the past eight years. His environmental record is about as good as the Clippers(Meaning it is horrible). But just recently George Bush has regained his ranking in the preservation of the environment.

I recently read two articles on Bush and his involvement with the environment called George Bush protects marine areas, and George W. Bushes Environmental Sins. While reading these two articles I started to notice something. One article ( as you may have guessed) discussed how Bushes plan for the environment was horrible and that a more suitable person for the job ( Barack Obama) had a better plan. The other article discussed how Bush had this great new plan to help preserve wildlife.

Bushes new plan had different reactions from many people. in the article George Bush protects marine areas, the author states "While he has resisted imposing mandatory curbs on greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change and has opened large areas of the nation to drilling, mining and other use of resources, by the end of his term he will have protected more ocean than any person in history." Then in the other article (George W. Bushes Environmental Sins by Katharine Mieszkowski) i read this: "By taking environmental policymaking away from scientists, and turning it over to industry cronies, Bush has made a mockery of the nation's environmental laws and values."

Now the question that was raised in my mind is, how did Bush go from the worst environmentalist ever, to the savior of ocean wildlife? That question to me is yet to be answered

While reading further I noticed that these two articles were connected in the fact that both of them had flaws with Bush and what he is doing with the environment ( one stating more flaws then the other). In the article discussing Bush's conservation plan, the issue brought to attention was about fishing. According to researchers, conservation was to start only 50 miles out vs. 200 miles out. Local sport fishing businesses didn't take this lightly. Micheal Hussman, president of the Sports fishing industry stated "If you're going to keep the public out of a public area, you need a darned good reason to do that,". After that he went on to say "We don't think they've met that 'darned good reason' test." The other article I read had to many flaws that Bush did that they are to many to name.

Quick Note*
Another thing I noticed as I was reading these articles is that one is an actual news editorial, and the other is an opinionated peace of writing from some random person. With that being said, I am pretty sure there is a limit to what can be said in a news editorial, but in an opinionated piece of writing, you are open to write anything you want of your choice.

I find the irony of this entire plan very ironic. This man, has just now decided to do something about the environment after eight years of presidency. Even researchers and scientist are shocked by this decision. Enric Sala a researcher for National Geographic even said "For a president that's not very green, ironically, this is going to be his largest legacy." Apparently for the the article, this is not the case. In fact, it is the exact opposite. According to that article Bush has "Abandoned endangered species". The author of the article Katharine even says "Not once during the Bush administration has the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service voluntarily sought to list a species as endangered or threatened, offering it more protections. All the high-profile listings, such as polar bears, have come about after the government has been sued or petitioned by environmental groups and citizens."

These two articles are very unique in the fact that they both show two different sides of George Bush, one that is making a stand and protecting the environment, and the other that is destroying it. After these two articles it is hard to determine what Bush's stand is on the environment and environmental issues.

Your Internship

1. What do you hope to learn or discover about the "adult" world of work while you are at your internship?

I hope to discover that work is not s grueling as people make it to be. I am pretty sure not all jobs consist of having to sit in a cubicle and file papers or do something on the computer. I want to know that someone can actually have fun at their job and enjoy it. Like my mom said "Make sure you find a job that you want to do and you can wake up in the moring wanting to go your job."

2. What do you hope to learn or discover about yourself and your identity while you are at your internship this semester?

I want to discover the type of person I am when I have to do work since I have never had a job before. I want to learn to control habits that may not be acceptable in the work force such as procrastination.

3. What goals do you have for yourself for your internship experience?

My main and most important goal is to not procrastinate with my internship project because it will take me the entire time to finish it. I also want to build a relationship with my mentor(get on their good side). Another goal is to stay positive because most likely i will be doing something thing that I really don't want to do like file some papers or a job like that. These are all of my goals for internship this semester.
